Breathe new life into your body.

Discover the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at Wesley Hyperbaric.

While it may sound new, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a centuries-old technology, being fine-tuned over time to produce the incredible treatment option we have available to us today. And at Wesley Hyperbaric, we’re proud to be industry-leaders, helping patients overcome a range of debilitating conditions, and get their life back.

Importantly, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is evidence-based and medically proven – acknowledged by Medicare and most health funds. Many studies and white papers have proven that it works, with ongoing trials and research into various conditions that could be treated. So you can be confident that it’s a legitimate treatment and not a new-age therapeutic approach.

As a licensed day hospital located within the Wesley Hospital precinct, we are fully equipped and ready to help you recover faster.

What exactly is it?

Think of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as being similar to diving, without the water. The treatment consists of breathing 100% oxygen whilst sitting in a large pressure filled hyperbaric chamber. The pressure simulates the equivalent of a person being 14 metres below sea level for most treatments.

How does it work?

By increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood plasma, the treatment stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in a hypoxic (low oxygenated) wound, which allows quicker healing. Also, bacteria have a limited tolerance to increased oxygen, and so the high levels of oxygen produced by the treatment can be toxic to many bacteria. Plus, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can help reduce swelling, which again allows wounds to heal faster.

At Wesley Hyperbaric, up to eight patients can be treated in the Hyperbaric Chamber at once, accompanied by a highly skilled nurse. After entering the Chamber air pressure starts to increase to 14m and everyone needs to pop their ears as they descend. Oxygen is then administered into their hood via hoses for 45 minutes, before a 5-minute air break where the hood is temporarily removed and drinks are provided. Oxygen is then continued for another 45 minutes, at which time the session is complete. The chamber is slowly decompressed and treatment is complete for the day.

What conditions does it treat?

We treat a range of conditions at Wesley Hyperbaric, with the most common being:

  • Diabetic non-healing wounds – which, when treated, often leads to limbs being saved, ultimately lengthening patients’ lives.
  • Soft tissue radiation injury – this includes soft tissue and bone injury as a result of radiation from cancer treatment, often on other/adjoining areas of the body.
  • Radiation proctitis and cystitis – again, damage from cancer radiation treatment, more isolated to the bowel and bladder areas, and bleeding or other issues that occur as a result.
  • Other non-healing wounds – issues such as post-surgery skin grafts and flaps not taking, which can also be successfully treated through Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

What does it cost?

Depending on your condition and whether or not you have private health insurance, the cost can vary.

If you have private health insurance

The initial assessment at Wesley Hyperbaric will help determine if hyperbaric oxygen therapy is suitable for you and will potentially incur some out-of-pocket expenses, with a rebate from Medicare only. Depending on the condition you have, most treatments in the Hyperbaric Chamber can be covered by your private health fund – but it’s important to check with your health fund as to the amount of cover you have. Please contact our reception on 07 3371 6033 for an accurate estimate of any potential out-of-pocket expenses.

If you do not have private health insurance

The initial assessment at Wesley Hyperbaric will help determine if hyperbaric oxygen therapy is suitable for you and will potentially incur some out-of-pocket expenses, with a rebate from Medicare only. Medicare will then only cover the bulk billing doctor costs for these five conditions:

  • Non-healing diabetic wounds
  • Soft tissue radiation injury
  • Osteoradionecrosis (ORN)
  • Necrotising fasciitis
  • Decompression illness

Please contact our reception on 07 3371 6033 for an accurate estimate of any potential out-of-pocket expenses.
