Breathe new life into your body.
See how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at Wesley Hyperbaric could help you overcome diabetic non-healing wounds.
While it may sound new, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a centuries-old technology, being fine-tuned over time to produce the incredible treatment option we have available to us today. And at Wesley Hyperbaric, we’re proud to be industry-leaders, helping patients overcome a range of debilitating conditions, and get their life back.
Importantly, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is evidence-based and medically proven – acknowledged by Medicare and most health funds. Many studies and white papers have proven that it works, with ongoing trials and research into various conditions that could be treated. So you can be confident that it’s a legitimate treatment and not a new-age therapeutic approach.
As a licensed day hospital located within the Wesley Hospital precinct, we are fully equipped and ready to help you recover faster.
What exactly is it?
Think of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as being similar to diving, without the water. The treatment consists of breathing 100% oxygen whilst sitting in a large pressure filled hyperbaric chamber. The pressure simulates the equivalent of a person being 14 metres below sea level for most treatments.
How does it work?
By increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood plasma, the treatment stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in a hypoxic (low oxygenated) wound, which allows quicker healing. Also, bacteria have a limited tolerance to increased oxygen, and so the high levels of oxygen produced by the treatment can be toxic to many bacteria. Plus, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can help reduce swelling, which again allows wounds to heal faster.
At Wesley Hyperbaric, up to eight patients can be treated in the Hyperbaric Chamber at once, accompanied by a highly skilled nurse. After entering the Chamber air pressure starts to increase to 14m and everyone needs to pop their ears as they descend. Oxygen is then administered into their hood via hoses for 45 minutes, before a 5-minute air break where the hood is temporarily removed and drinks are provided. Oxygen is then continued for another 45 minutes, at which time the session is complete. The chamber is slowly decompressed and treatment is complete for the day.
How does it treat diabetic non-healing wounds?
Left undetected and uncontrolled, injury or trauma to the feet, can eventually lead to serious conditions or even amputation.
By using the latest technology, we are able to accurately assess circulation and monitor it on an on-going basis, ensuring any issues are detected early, preventing further damage. If patients are already at the point where they’re suffering from non-healing wounds due to diabetes, our non-invasive, pain-free treatment can help at this stage too – improving circulation – microscopically – to the wound area and allowing the body to recover and heal faster.
What does it cost?
Depending on your condition and whether or not you have private health insurance, the cost can vary.
